Once ice accumulates on power transmission lines in high-altitude, cold mountainous areas, the load on the conductors increases, making it highly likely to cause line breaks and tower collapses. Furthermore, ice accumulation is a recurring issue; even after a single de-icing operation, if low temperatures, rain, and snow persist, ice will build up again, repeatedly increasing the costs of labor and materials for operations and maintenance. To address the challenges of ice hazard monitoring on transmission lines, Dingxin Smart Technology has launched the DX-WPS100-FB3 Transmission LineMicrowave Ice Accumulation Monitoring Device. This is an online ice hazard monitoring device for transmission lines based on microwave detection principles, designed for round-the-clock online monitoring of ice thickness on towers, conductors, and insulators. It falls under the category of early-warning monitoring equipment for transmission line ice disasters.
Relying on traditional manual inspections makes it difficult to achieve 24-hour uninterrupted monitoring; measures can only be taken after ice buildup has become noticeable or a failure has occurred, which amounts to a reactive approach and makes it difficult to prevent and control potential ice-related hazards in advance. In contrast, microwave icing monitoring devices combine microwave detection with environmental temperature analysis. The sensors utilize the different feedback signals generated by microwaves in ice, water, and air to calculate the thickness of the ice buildup. When the thickness reaches a preset threshold, the system automatically triggers an alarm and can activate de-icing equipment, ensuring the stable operation of transmission lines. Installation requires no power outage.
The microwave icing monitoring device can simultaneously collect multiple environmental data points around the transmission tower, including temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind speed and direction, rainfall, and solar radiation. All monitoring data is automatically stored and uploaded to the operations and maintenance (O&M) backend, allowing O&M personnel to view icing changes along the entire line from the monitoring center and promptly identify abnormal icing.
The device features a built-in self-diagnostic mechanism that continuously monitors the operational status of the network, serial port, and sensors, and proactively reports alerts when a fault occurs. It utilizes 4G remote data transmission, is compatible with IoT SIM cards and APN configurations from multiple carriers, and supports a variety of communication protocols. The sensors are equipped with automatic heating and automatically de-ice at the end of each monitoring cycle to ensure that the next monitoring cycle is not obstructed by ice or snow, thereby enabling continuous and stable data collection.
Power Supply and Protection: The system uses a combined solar power and battery power supply, with an operating temperature range of -40°C to 85°C. It has an IP66 protection rating and is designed to withstand lightning strikes, dust, water, and snow accumulation. Featuring a low-power architecture, it can operate continuously for more than 15 days in cloudy or rainy conditions with no sunlight. Data transmission is encrypted, and the system supports integration with the State Grid and China Southern Power Grid operations and maintenance platforms.
